He said in 2008 that mainline Protestants — about 45 million Presbyterians, Lutherans, Congregationalists, Episcopalians, Methodists and others — are “gone from the world of Christianity as I see it.”

....and we bear witness to the slow and painfully embarrassing fall of the party of Ike, the last reasonable GOP leader with any real merit.
The GOP has, in this election season, demonstrated what "the race to the bottom" really means. They exemplify it.
Divide and conquer tactics, fear based mantra's, religious fanaticism, and an extraordinary desire to "eat their own" (given license to do so via Citizens United) all contribute to their quest to win the "race to the bottom".
A shame really.
