ttorneys general from 18 states sued Tuesday in Federal District Court in Massachusetts to block President Donald Trump's move to end a policy known as birthright citizenship guaranteeing that U.S.-born children are citizens regardless of their parents' status. North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson joined in the suit.
The states view Trump’s attempt to limit birthright citizenship as “extraordinary and extreme,”
said New Jersey’s attorney general, Matthew J. Platkin, who led the legal effort along with the attorneys general from California and Massachusetts. “Presidents are powerful, but he is not a king. He cannot rewrite the Constitution with a stroke of the pen.”
