Nailing Jello to a Wall
David Barton is the fundamentalist preacher that Mike Huckabee and Michelle Bachmann think is the number one constitutional authority in the United States and the greatest "historian" of the supposedly incorrect notion of a wall between church and state. He's profiled in the NYTimes this a.m.He was also Jon Stewart's guest on The Daily Show last night, and the entire, extended interview (several different clips -- it goes on for probably 15-20 minutes) is well worth watching. Personally, we haven't heard any man talk that fast and be that distractive and slippery since we were negotiating with a fellow in a shark-skin suit over a used Rambler with a rolled-back odometer.
Bottomline: Barton thinks the 90% Christian majority in this country is oppressed, and he wants explicitly Christian beliefs applied up and down the scale in government. Oh, he claims he only says stuff like this to pastors, but whatever. He has said that the Christian Bible mandates against deficit spending, against graduated income taxes, against the minimum wage, and against doing anything about global warming.
Jon Stewart remains the most incisive, and the most civil, interviewer on the planet.

Profit and Human Life
We've been following Jon Stewart's attacks on the U.S. Senate for failing to pass the 9/11 first responders health bill. His stunning show last Thursday was not the only time he's brought up Senate Republicans' hypocrisy and their failure to help the men and women who are actually and literally dying from exposure to toxic dust and other contaminants at the World Trade Center site.
What Jon Stewart did not tell us -- at least I don't recall this in any of his analysis of why Republican senators blocked the bill -- is that the proposal included paying for the health-care costs by closing certain corporate tax loopholes on foreign investments. Apparently, big business went nuts on their puppets in the Senate.
Now -- and Jon Stewart probably deserves some credit for this -- there's new hope that the bill will be resurrected with the costs shifted to "a 2 percent fee on procurement contracts for certain countries, combined with a visa fee." Whatever the hell that means.

Dueling D.C. rallies/marches on Oct. 30th ... Jon Stewart's "Rally to Restore Sanity" (a.k.a., "Million Moderate March") or Stephen Colbert's rival "March to Keep Fear Alive."This just may be the ONLY place to be on October 30th.
First one to organize a bus from Watauga County will get ... let's see ... something moderately frightful, just in time for Halloween.

Friday Smorgasbord
Apparently, Republican senators are rethinking their determination to protect the big Wall Street banking institutions at all costs. Ahhh. But we ain't holding our breath. You know, right? that a tiger's stripes are not just an exterior, furry sort of adornment. Those stripes are a part of the dermis of the animal. Republican senators are gwine to do what Republican senators do best (and, unfortunately, too many DemSenators too!) ... protect Big Money.Franklin Graham can't shake the memory of what he said about Islam. Not that he wants to. (HT: Watauga Democrat for calling attention to this controversy.)
We laughed ourselves silly last night at Jon Stewart's gospel-choir approach to responding to Bernie Goldberg and Fox News: "Fox News is such a crazy over-reaction to that perceived threat [of the supposed Liberal Media], you're like an auto-immune disorder...."
