The Musk Perplex

Matthew Yglesias (@mattyglesias) in a Twitter ramp-up Dec. 22nd:

I know a lot of people in the technology industry have deep admiration for @elonmusk and find it baffling that many others have a negative reaction to him despite his lofty ideals and undeniable achievements. I have a theory about why some see him negatively. I think that when Musk makes these very concise interventions into public debates without explaining fully what he means or how his statements cohere with each other, it leads people who don’t know him or his industry personally to think he’s not on the level.

I’m sure he has good reasons for everything he says, including the things that appear to be hypocritical or false or just overstated. But a good way to secure more support would be to try not to say those things, unless he has time and inclination to fully explain himself.

China is a big market and Musk has interests in China. In the Continuing Resolution was prohibition against particular advanced technology being exported to China which would have impinged on Musk's interests. He couldn't come out and say this specifically because he would appear to contradict economic war with China. So Musk squawked and told lies about the
Continuing Resolution to derail it. Trump was beholden and stupid enough to tag along, and also clumsily injected a proposal for a 3 month suspension of the Debt Ceiling, to accommodate a speedy tax cut for his donors, the wealthiest class. Do we see Musk backing Trump up on harebrained tariff proposals, invasions, taking back the Panama Canal and annexing Greenland?
Of course not, because such dopiness is shameful and reveals a senile man out of touch with reality. The Panama Canal is recently a casualty of climate change (not enough rainfall for locks) and alternate transportation corridors are being developed. Trump doesn't read; he doesn't listen to briefings; doesn't understand that both Empire and Civilization are crumbling. He's trapped in a
delusion of a glorious past and an age of abundance. Trump can't see how vulnerable and stupid LNG ships are. He's a ventriloquist dummy for anyone with big bucks. It is plain now that his promise to lower prices on basic goods was a cruel falsehood. Many voters are worried about Social Security, Medicare, SNAP and other supports being robbed. Even white men finally understand that all costs continue to rise (mortgages, insurance, medical, truck payments) , partly due to profiteering, partly due to a shrinking dollar , and especially due to bad weather, depleted topsoil and mergers.
