Sen. George Allen (R-Va.) crashes and burns after calling a South Asian "macaca" on-camera and is immediately invited by powerful North Carolina Republican interests to make a speech in Lenoir (with none other than Virginia Foxx fawning from the wings, in between trips to the buffet table).
Then current Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell asks the white citizens of his state officially to celebrate Confederate History Month and thoughtfully omits any mention of the fact of slavery, lest anyone be unfortunately confronted by actual history. McDonnell is now the featured headline speaker at a NC GOP fundraiser tomorrow night in Raleigh.
Racial politics in the Old North State. And proof of what Michael Steele was saying earlier this week.
At least he didn't call our President light skinned with no negro dialect (Harry Reid). He didn't say of our President, "A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee" (Bill Clinton to Ted Kennedy). He didn't call Colin Powell an "Uncle Tom" (Daily Kos, Harry Belafonte and others).
ReplyDeleteAt least he has enough class not to call patriotic, informed Americans peacefully assembling in protest, a homo-erotic term tea baggers. (this blog)
Allen's a good man.
And we tar heels don't have a KKK Grand Dragon as the senior democrat in the Senate.
ReplyDeleteHonest? Debate:
ReplyDeleteRacism is racism, pure and simple. One form is no justification for another. Be honest, now.
PS: Glad to see you can quote Democrats. I'm sure you can quote 10 racist Repubs racist remarks for every 1 Dem. Go for it.
I do not think one can even go one to one with racists remarks between the parties. Republicans freed the slaves. Democrats include George Wallace and Robbert Byrd. Democrats support racists gun laws. Look at the statements Democrats have made about Clarence Thomas.

ReplyDeleteObviously, we see the world differently. Such is life.
But RACISM, is still, RACISM.
Anonymous, are you implying that George Wallace justifies the blatant racism displayed by the Republican party of today? Or that Abraham Lincoln somehow exonerates it? There are certainly racists within the party, but as a whole Democrats are the party of inclusiveness and diversity - no question about it. Just look at the demographics of the conventions. The Republican party on the other hand is becoming narrower and narrower as it preaches the politics of hate and fear.
ReplyDeleteWitness the current push by the Republicans to "purify" their platform.
Nice post and link, Bridle. I sometimes get so tired of explaining to thickheads, like Anon (good handle) who really cling to hopeless and meaningless ideas to validate their own racism, or sexism, or homophobia or distortions.
ReplyDeleteStay on point, Bridle. Good job!
