Money and the November Election

Guest Blogging: Hayes McNeill

I have been thinking about this, and I have concluded that it seems strange that right now the Press can't talk about anything but Tea Baggers and how they are going to clean our clocks. And then turn those clocks back.

The Baggers tend to thump on the Constitution (which few seem to have read and even fewer respect), pulling odd bits out to justify their kind of crazy.

Some are demented, even more are deluded, still others child-like and pouty. But we must never forget that behind these people is Big Money, writing the checks that pay for their busses and rallies and their candidates. The Big Money Boys -- and now, thanks to Republicans on the Supreme Court, corporations hidden in the shadows -- these Big Money Boys can spread the manure in which their puppets roll and play.

I am too harsh, you think? I am so old that when I grew up in Wilkes County, there were still some farmers. From time to time one of these farmers would sell a horse or a mule by claiming that "he's good about standing still when tied." When I consider politicians like Richard Burr and Virginia Palmieri Foxx, I have to think of those horses and mules. Both Burr and Foxx have built their careers by doing exactly what they were told by the Big Money Boys. Almost two decades in Washington and ... is Burr known for a single piece of legislation? And Foxx ... against education, against heathcare, against disaster victims.

This is important because this November these two races, as well as all the races in which we are fielding candidates, allow us to choose among the character traits we want in our political leaders. We voters do not and cannot know what problems will beset us in the future. So we had sure as hell better choose leaders with strong and decent characters to represent us. It is on this character issue where the Richard Burrs and Virginia Palmieri Foxxes are weighed and found wanting. As are those who would challenge our Raleigh delegation. Big Money doesn't care a hoot in hell if their candidates have character. They just want them to do as they are told.

We know we will be outspent in this election. We know that Big Money will write Big Checks to fund the Big Lies which the Gullible will eat up. But we also know that our best defense -- sometimes our only defense -- is our vote. You know already that we have to vote early. You know that we have to make it our personal goal to see that our extended families and our friends vote and vote early. You know that we must reach out to neighbors and fellow-workers and people we see socially or in church to witness to them about Character and its importance to our futures and the futures of our children. We must remind anyone who will stand still to listen that the Tea Party is about exhuming the dried-up past. The Democrats are about the future.

This is the way we can stick it to the radicals and the crackpots and their big money backers.

See you at the polls.

This thread reminds you of how Cullie Tarleton's seat was purchased for him by out of district money when he outspent Wilson three to one.

  2. Anonymous, that is ridiculous. Cullie beat Wilson because Wilson was one of the most ineffective, do-nothing Legislators in the whole state. Wilson acted like he deserved to stay there forever. Cullie was an articulate, hard working opponent who was willing to listen, work hard, and consult his constituents. Cullie raised money all over the district, got to know the issues, appealed to moderate, thinking people of both parties, and very deservedly won the seat from which he has helped serve the needs of all the people he represents. Do you read the weekly reports he emails his constituents? You should, they will let you know the kind of man you are smearing. I am proud to call Cullie my representative in Raleigh and hope the voters will not be swayed fy the false propaganda being put out by the other side.

I have had personal dealings with Tarleton. He is a charlatan and a crook.

The amounts spent of his campaign against Wilson are not hard to find as is the fact the majority of the money was not locally raised in the district. It came from the state wide Democrat party and special interests..

Yes I get his propaganda sheets that try to spin his spending and taxation efforts into something positive.

    >He is a charlatan and a crook.

In what way, Anonymous? Specifics, please.

And yes, the mailers for his first campaign were paid for by the state Party. The money against our local legislators this time ($300,000 of it) is coming from a group out of the Washington, D.C. area! Why the heck do they care who we elect in a state race from a little bitty district in the mountains?

I, too, have had personal dealings with Cullie. He was honest, sincere and kept his word.

He supported several things such as a land trade in Blowing Rock and how the national forest was to be managed in a manner that was a conflict of interest . He pushed his religious values on others concerning hunting on Sunday. He has used his office for personal gain, in my opinion.

Cullie's no richer now than when he first went into office 4 years ago, so there's no way he's 'used his office for personal gain'. The land swap was a federal deal, not state. And the hunting on Sunday thing, I understand, was to allow local jurisdictions to make that determination rather than to have an edict about it come down from on high. I don't know where Tarleton personally stands on Sunday hunting.

Heck, I don't even know where I stand. But then I'm in church Sundays (as is Cullie - I see him and Sylvia headed in to church most Sundays as I'm headed in across the street), so it doesn't affect me.

What a complete load of crap Hayes McNeill wrote. No proof of any of it - he just doesn't like conservatives. We get it. Next time put some substance into what you write as opposed to a bunch of hateful remarks and catch phrases from the leftist media like "big money." BTW, the media spends far more of its "big money" on democratic candidates than republicans. But, of course, since you agree with their "causes" that is okay - the ends in your opinion justify the means. No wonder JW had you guest write - you fit right in with he and his hate spewing wife.

The reason Cullie is not richer now than he was four years ago is that Obama;s economy killed the real estate market. Cullie certainly did all he could to protect his "million dollar view".

Who was it from the other site who can't get over the BR land swap? Was it Wolf's Head UHA?

No, it was several different people. Maybe you should check your facts.

Any comment on about the very enlightening thread concerning the truth of Tarleton's claims on the Watauga Conservative?
