Foxx: There'll Be No Coddling of Murdered Students Here!

Cutting to the chase: Congresswoman Virginia Foxx was one of two lone Republicans (the other one from Texas ... natch!) who refused to support a resolution acknowledging the tragedy at Kent State on May 4, 1970, when four unarmed students were shot dead by National Guardsmen and nine others were wounded in a barrage of gunfire aimed at students protesting the Vietnam War.

Foxx and the Texan voted "present" rather than joining the 413 fellow Congressmen and women who voted "aye." Here's the text of the resolution, in its entirety:
Whereas the year 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of the Kent State University shootings that occurred on May 4, 1970;

Whereas, on such date, Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire on Kent State students who were protesting the United States invasion of Cambodia and the ongoing Vietnam War;

Whereas four unarmed students (Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer, and William Schroeder) were killed and nine others (Alan Canfora, John Cleary, Thomas Grace, Dean Kahler, Joseph Lewis, Donald MacKenzie, James Russell, Robert Stamps, and Douglas Wrentmore) were injured;

Whereas the site of the May 4 shootings was entered in the National Register of Historic Places, the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation, in February 2010;

Whereas, to preserve the memory of the May 4 shootings and encourage inquiry, learning, and reflection, Kent State has established a number of resources, including the May 4 Memorial, individual student memorial markers and scholarships in memory of the four students mentioned above who were killed, an experimental college course entitled "May 4, 1970 and its Aftermath," and an annual commemoration sponsored by the May 4 Task Force; and

Whereas Kent State has engaged the internationally renowned design services firm, Gallagher & Associates, to assist in the development of the May 4 visitors center as a central place where individuals can explore and better understand the May 4 shootings: Now therefore be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives, in commemoration of the 40th year anniversary of the Kent State University shootings that occurred on May 4, 1970--

(1) recognizes the tragedy of the May 4 shootings and the implications that the shootings have had not only on Kent State and the local community, but also on the Nation and the world; and

(2) applauds the development of the May 4 visitors center as an additional primary resource to preserve and communicate the history of the May 4 shootings, its larger ethical and societal context and impact, and its enduring meaning for our democratic Nation.

Hard to know what burr got under Madam Foxx's britches, but maybe it was that wholly gratuitous reference to "our democratic Nation." Hey! That's your opinion, Congress!

    Now, maybe if they build a tea pot museum on the Kent State site Foxx could support it.

    What a hateful vote by the Madam. Please, 5th District voters, remember this in November!

    I've visited Kent State recently, and the memorial there now sucks. They can do better than that - as can Virginia Foxx.

    What a tragedy. The governor called in the guard after the rioters burned the ROTC building but he never cancelled classes.

    One of those kids who was killed was walking to class and wasn't even involved in the protest/riots.

    Congresswoman Fox made the wrong vote on this one.

  6. how about a resolution acknowledging the 85 people, including children, who were murdered by the government in Waco Texas. This event is rarely talked about by the liberal news media as it shows the dangerous nature of an out of control government. Yet you worry about 4 dead students from 1970? Their deaths have been acknowledged in songs and media, but Waco has been swept under the rug. notice also how the militia members arrested last month is not in the news.

    DC9 - Waco was an armed insurrection by religious fanatics.They were Christian terrorists with an arsenal of illegally stockpiled weapons. There were allegations and evidence of child abuse. It was not exactly your typical college student protest. Your comparison is totally bogus.

    Waco was a publicity stunt by the BATF that went astray. The BATF leaked the raid to the press and as per video footage from the raid were the party that opened fire in the first place. The Branch Dividians were licensed firearms dealers. There has never been any proof that any illegal weapons were on site. The government would not allow any weapons that were found to be dissembled and inspected. There was no evidence of drugs ever found. Texas authorities inspected the site less than a month before the government siege and murder of these civilians occured for alligations of child abuse. There were no indications of any abuse. The site was kept closed from any independent investigation until it was destroyed.

    Bridle, you sir, are the person that is bogus, and a liar.

    Something besides Rush Limbaugh (the clown prince of Bloviation nation) or National Inquirer type sources?

    Bridle,

    Point one: Even if there was evidence of child abuse, it was none of the feds business, because child abuse is NOT a federal offense.

    Point two: It is NOT illegal to stockpile weapons and ammo.

    Bridle:
    Your position on the Waco incident is well-founded and documented.

    Child abuse is EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS.

    The idea that they were just "licensed firearms dealers" is absurd.

    Bridle: You, sir, are "spot on." Keep up the good posts.

    No Compromise - I believe there are in fact federal regulations regarding weapons stockpiles. And here is another viewpoint about the tragedy at Waco.
    I don't know about you, but I sure don't want a bunch of grenade hoarding, religious wackos who are trying to create Armageddon living in my neighborhood.

    View the documentary WACO: THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT. The AMERICAN RIFLEMAN also had many articles on some of these subjects. Do a brief search on Google and you will find all the documentation you want.

    Thank you for admitting your intolerance of those that do not agree exactly with you. It seems that you would force your neighbors that you do not like to move instead of moving yourself. What a hypocrite you are.

  14. No Compromise12:08 PM

    Bridle,
    Did you read what you linked to? The article is about forming militias and not about stockpiling LEGAL weapons. How many weapons does stockpiling entail? Is there a magic number that determines where a private collection ends and a stockpile begins? You mentioned grenades. The Branch Davidians didn't have grenades.

    BB,
    Your response that child abuse is everybody's business is a typical the-Constitution-be-damned POV response.

    Anon - Ask yourself how you would feel about a weapons stockpile if it were in the house next to yours - owned by Muslims who loudly proclaimed their hatred of our government.
    No Compromise - same question for you too. And BB is absolutely correct. Child abuse is a matter that concerns all of us. It is a federal crime.

    By all means. When your child comes home abused, I hope you alert the police who will first peruse the Constitution to see if they can respond.

    Bridle,
    Child abuse is not a federal crime, unless the abuse involves crossing state lines. Show me where child abuse within a state is a federal crime.

    BB, To report child abuse, I would call the local police or the local sheriff, and not the FBI.

  18. bridle6:23 PM

    No Comp - Are you seriously defending those wackos? It's my understanding they refused entry to Federal agents with lawful warrants.

    Would you also defend a compound full of radical, polygamous,child raping, weapons stockpiling Muslims in your neighborhood?

  20. Bridle,

    If it were child abuse then why was this an ATF Operation? As Anonymous said, the Davidians were investigated for child abuse by the state some weeks before and came away with no deregotory information found. Something even more interesting is the fact that the Texas Rangers refused to take part in the initial ATF raid as well as the stand off. Texas Rangers even questioned the need for a "raid" stating that David Koresch could be picked up on one of his many trips to town as well as during his daily exercise runs.

    Making matters even more interesting is the fact that no illegal weapons were ever found in the Branch Davidian Compound. The Branch Davidians, like them or not, were American citizens exercising their 2nd Amendment rights. Stockpiling weapons, as Anonymous stated very well, is not a crime. If Muslims were stockpiling weapons beside my home, I would have nothing to say if they were US Citizens.

    Again, the question on why Waco has been swept under the rug is the question. 4 students died at Kent State at the hands of the government. They are remembered in songs, literature, and television. Waco, by stark contrast, has been subdued by the liberal media. No Neil Young songs about kids burning alive. No reporting by the media once it was determined that the Branch Davidians were innocent of ALL accusations. This tragic, uncalled for application of government power has been covered up and swept away. Think about it. 85 dead in a few minutes. That is a horror. Yet you have Bridled and BB defending the actions of an out of control govt!!!! Unbelievable.

    The better question would be "Would you be comfortable with the FBI conducting raids against you based on false information?"

    My neighbor's gun collection is none of my business, no matter what their political beliefs. Why do you think it should be yours? The Heller decision that clarified the Second Amendment as an individual civil right must have killed your soul.

    According to everything I can find, child abuse is a crime covered under states rights jurisdiction. As No Compromise says, the federal government only gets involved when state lines are crossed and then only under specific circumstances. The feds had no jurisdiction as to allegations of child abuse in Waco. The child abuse issue was a cover your butt tactic used by the feds.

    Selling guns when one is licensed to do so is not illegal, not is having an inventory to sell, nor is owning personal firearms.

    Maybe some people consider you to be radical. Should the government come in and kill you and your family?

    The Texas State authorities said there was no child abuse.

    Please post a proof of polygamy and justify burning people to death because of it.

    If Muslims did do the things you talk about and the government burned them alive, would you defend their deaths as you do the deaths at Waco? I don't think so.

    I see, with some amusement, how the coward Anonymous changed the language from a "stockpile of weapons" to "my neighbor's gun collection."

    And the Wackos cooperated immediately and fully with the FBI. Right.

    BB what is the official definition of a gun collection and the official definition of stock piling weapons? When does a licensed firearms dealer become someone that stockpiles weapons instead of someone that maintains an inventory? Which government agency makes these decisions and by what authority do they do so? As video footage from the start of the raid indicates the BATF fired first, would you have been eager to expose yourself as a target thereafter, especially as there was a news blackout in place by this time?

    And the victims at Waco did not perish with the sword. They perished by a fire started when flammable gas was injected into the building by tanks and then ignited. The victims at Waco did not "live with the sword." Their principle crime was in not being politically correct. BB, is your church approved by the government?

    Anonymous - See the following Treasury Department report detailing the illegal weapons recovered from the compound.
    See the following report from the Justice Department about the allegations of child rape and abuse.
    You should also be aware That Koresh had a history of violence and was tried for attempted murder in 1987. The Texas prosecutor in the case stated that " David Koresh was building an arsenal" and "preparing for a battle with someone."
    The siege was not well planned or executed, for sure. But the government had an obligation to look into these dangerous wackos. Just as it has an obligation to check out other types of terrorists.
    They defied a lawful warrent and shot at Federal Agents. That was just plain stupid, and it's a real shame that they allowed their children to suffer the consequences of their own criminal stupidity.

    Koresh was acquitted of those charges. Is it possible you could be charged with something and be innocent? The government would not allow the the disassembley and examination of the weapons they claim to be illegal. There is no way they could determine if they were fully automatic without doing so. Several members of the Branch Dividians were licensed gun dealers. At least one was a class three dealer that was licensed to sell the items listed in your link. The key wording in your second link is alligations. The state of Texas determined the allegations were false.

    BB, I do not have to resort to your tactics. But then you never say anything other than attack someone so there is nothing substantive in your posts for you to defend.

    Bridle, take a look at the video shot by the news people at the beginning of the siege. It shows the BATF opening fire on the Branch Davidians without provocation. You can see it with your own eyes. You can drink all the Kool Aid you want, but the fact is that the government killed men women, and children by burning them to death when they did not have to. They could have maintained the siege, but instead took actions that resulted in the deaths of these people because the government's position was beginning to be questioned.

    Anonymous - Remember when you talk about "the government" you are talking about people like you and me, who have a job to do, decisions to make, and have to use their best judgement in dangerous situations some times. When I was a teenager I used to think all policemen were "pigs" until a friend of mine joined the police force and helped me see that they are usually good people who want to do good, but sometimes get caught up in bad situations. This whole thing you have of "Government= Bad" is really simplistic and immature.
