"While [Gov. Mike] Easley is popular in the polls, some Democrats are not wildly enthusiastic about him. Some of the faithful note his unconventional behavior, such as not showing up at party events, most recently the welcome home rally for the Democratic ticket of John Kerry and John Edwards this month." Thus spake the Raleigh News & Observer this a.m. by way of explaining how come Ricky Kipfer, the odd-ball challenger to Easley on the primary ballot who didn't even campaign, still managed to get almost 65,000 votes statewide in Tuesday's voting.
"Which leads inquiring minds to wonder: Was there a protest vote of sorts against Democratic Gov. Mike Easley?"
