Howard Dean spoke clearly and well on "Meet the Press" with Tim Russert yesterday morning. At one point during the hour-long grilling, Russert said that while he was in Iowa two weeks ago he had noticed a letter to the editor published in the Des Moines Register. Russert proceeded to read highly negative comments about Dean from that letter.
Turns out that what Russert failed to share with his audience, and with the governor, is that the letter was written by Jim Bootz of Chaska, Minnesota -- Minnesota State Director for John Kerry. Bootz's letter was one of 53 letters to the editor published the day Russert says he just "happened to see it. As Howie Kurtz says, "Hmmm."
