The Right To Discriminate, Coming to North Carolina

2015 "newspeak": "Religious freedom" = "The right to discriminate against others"

Hattip Chad Nance of The Camel City Dispatch

"Newspeak" (Wikipedia): Newspeak is the fictional language in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, written by George Orwell. It is a controlled language created by the totalitarian state as a tool to limit freedom of thought, and concepts that pose a threat to the regime such as freedom, self-expression, individuality, and peace. Any form of thought alternative to the party’s construct is classified as "thoughtcrime."

Two different clones of the Indiana "religious freedom" law have been introduced in the General Assembly in Raleigh. One or both of them will pass at least the Senate and probably the House. Will Pat McCrory have the intestinal fortitude to veto? Anything is possible, perhaps, but it doesn't really matter what McCrory does. North Carolina's lawmakers will institute a whole new era of Jim Crow just ahead of or in tandem with the Supreme Court's expected decision regarding gay marriage.

What do we think of a highly "Christian" state of the union which feels that it must be empowered by government to treat a class of people as less than human? What do we think of the "Christian" members of the NC General Assembly who want to unleash and empower this hatred and divisiveness?

From such turn away (2 Timothy 3:5). "People, what are you doing? We are humans too, just like you! We are proclaiming the good news to you: turn to the living God and away from such worthless things. He made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything in them" (Acts 14:15).

And yet the legislature chose to work AGAINST religious freedom when it forbade MY church from marrying gay couples whom we knew to be in lifelong, committed relationships!

Government needs to stay OUT of religion and go about the business of treating ALL its citizens with fairness....though, frankly, this kind of law is the most UN-Christian thing I can imagine!

"A new command I give you: Love one another." (John 13:34)

It's all about divide and conquer. We should be asking why these people are so determined to set one group of Americans against another. Why do they need to create an underclass, that includes our brothers and sisters, our children, our neighbors and friends? When Americans become gays against straights, blacks against whites, Christians against Muslims, we are all weakened. What is the underlying agenda here?

Good question Meatcamp, and of course the larger issue is getting the yay-hoos all worked up so more tax cuts for the rich can keep coming--and an excuse to keep slashing $ for that hotbed of liberal perversion, the UNC system.

This is all political theater.

The Republicans, for the most part, know full well that this law will get struck down in court when they realize that it not only allows bigots to discriminate against LGBTs, but will allow discrimination against Blacks, Jews, Muslims or anyone else that someone doesn't like as a class.

The legislature will pass the bill, throwing red meat to ultra-conservatives in their home districts, hoping for big turnout when they run for re-election by church groups.

Meanwhile, McCrory, looking at a statewide race, will try to appear to be the moderate voice of reason and won't sign the bill, trying to shore up votes in his own race against Cooper.

The citizens of NC, as usual, will be left holding the bag when the legislature overrides McCrory's veto.

It goes beyond loosing business - if the law passes and the "No Gays/Muslims/Blacks/Jews" signs go up in businesses around the state, talented people will leave for areas where they won't feel they're living in an ISIS-controlled territory.
