The People in Charge of Watauga Voting Are Just Damn Stupid

Luke Eggers
If you piled up all the ineptitude committed by Republicans Four Luke Eggers and Bill Aceto on the Watauga County Board of Elections, you'd have a hill you could ski down.

From the moment he was sworn in with no witnesses except his brother, to the very next moment when he raced downstairs in the county courthouse to deliver his edict for a special meeting of the Board of Elections, to the bright idea to move that meeting from the large hearing room in the county admin. bldg. to the tiny BOE conference room, to the refusal to inform the Democratic board member and the public at large of what was in the controversial resolutions up for a vote -- possibly because Luke didn't know, or didn't understand, fully what his brother Four had put into those resolutions -- to the mouthing off of Anne Marie Yates that she was a participant in deciding the content of those resolutions ... it's all a prime example of rank clumsiness, incompetence, and lack of political skill.

Hey, guys, if you're going to attempt a major coup on voter rights, you might want to try to cover your tracks.

And now comes yesterday morning the latest example of casual unfitness for office of Mr. Eggers and Mr. Aceto: they voted to wholly whitewash the minutes of their first public outing, thereby hoping (we guess) to rewrite history and thus erase their embarrassing inadequacy.

It's a cliche these days, but you really couldn't make this s**t up! If you tried, it would be condemned as an improbable fiction.

The problem is the entire meeting is archived on Ustream via Amiris Live. They can change all the minutes they want but the truth is out there.

"The problem is the entire meeting is archived on Ustream via Amiris Live."

Most meetings are digitally recorded except for those in executive session. This is one reason verbatim minutes are not necessary.

Why do you think this is a problem?

From the viewpoint of a local moderate Republican who is seriously considering a trip to the Board Of Elections to make a change in party affiliation...

First what has happened with the actions of our Board of Elections makes we want to leave this town and county and relocate. There was absolutely no call for this action. It reminds me of family control in a church attempting to serve the community and carry out their mission but can not because one family does not approve of it and there money drives the controls the congregation. Although several people may be involved if you focused on the root of this cancer you would find Anne Marie Yates. Her ability to run her mouth to people (Republicans) who do not really agree with her would reveal this to be true.

Second, I think Ms. Campbell could have handled herself a little differently. Her use of the word damn was way to soft. I honestly do not know how she could keep herself calm. I applaud her for standing up to what she knew was wrong and admire her for trying to set things straight. As a side note and unrelated to this subject, I applaud David Blust for having the courage to stand with the Democrats on a recent vote.

Third, I am blessed to have the friendships with so many people in this county... Democrat, Republican, Christian, Non-Christian, Jewish, Gay, Straight, conservative, liberal, and I respect their point of view. Actions that the Board of Elections have taken are messing with the rights and feelings of my friends and I do not take that very lightly.

Fourth, I have never (and never will) vote a straight ticket. I take back the comment "never will". Next election, I just might vote a straight Democrat ticket. The point I am making is we have citizens in this county who are passionate about what they believe and are willing to serve and I will stand with and support them. One example is Andy Ball. This man is passionate about serving our town and that is obvious. This is the type of people we need leading our town and county.

Finally, a word to my Democrat friends... there is a silver lining and I suggest you claim it. The actions we have seen in the newly elected Board of Elections have pretty much assured your place in office for years to come.

Jerry, thank you for the opportunity to share my thoughts with people I admire.xtutut

A local moderate Republican = RINO liberal. Good riddance.

I think this pretty much sums up everything that's wrong with politics today, on both sides but particularly in the Republican party. Rather than accepting a diversity of points of view, too many on the far right demonize and alienate the moderates in their party. We need more people in both parties who are less partisan, less hard-line, and more willing to work across the aisle. Political polarization has made Congress all but ineffective and is generally toxic to society. This is a big reason that so many people today, me included, are registered as Independents.

The reason we have different parities is to allow for diversity. If there is there is too much diversity inside one party, it will never win.

I am an Independent because the Republican party is to liberal.

Oh sweet Jesus in heaven - in what universe is today's Republican Party "To (sic) Liberal"? Can you give us even one example of something liberal that Republicans have done?

This universe.

Amnesty for illegal aliens, not defunding Obama care, not suing Obama for circumventing the balance of powers as per the Constitution

You are delusional, Anonymous.

Hmmm.... the Republicans have voted to repeal Obamacare 40 times! How do you propose that they do this, when the Senate will not do the same, and certainly President Obama is not going to sign into law a repeal of the Affordable Care Act! You Republicans have such unrealistic expectations! I must have missed the day when we granted amnesty to illegal immigrants - when did that happen? Your post as well as the one above that Not Really commented on just shows us that the right wing lives in a bubble that is not at all connected to reality.

BW, check your reading skills. I said defund Obama care. The House can do this.

bettywhite said...

Is that all you've got, Anonymous? A petty insult about my reading skills? The House can't pass laws on its own - it still needs the Senate and the President. So, while in theory they could defund ObamaCare, it's not going to happen. Watching the Republicans in the House is equivalent to watching kids on the playground throwing temper tantrums.

The House can stop funding on its own just like the Senate can block the house on new legislation. All funding has to start in the House. If the House says no funding, there is no funding.

The funding mechanisms are already in place. Stopping them would require a new law, one that must get through the Senate and then be signed by President Obama. Not gonna happen! The House CAN'T do anything by itself and pass it into law - they can't bypass the Senate or President Obama.
