When Did Dan Soucek Choose?

"I think there is a real fundamental difference between the civil rights of African Americans and the gay and lesbian community," he said. "You can't choose the color of your skin, but you can choose your sexual behavior." --Sen. Dan Soucek, during debate over the anti-gay marriage Constitutional amendment, this week in the NC General Assembly.

You can choose your sexual behavior? Not according to the American Medical Association. Not according to the American Psychiatric Association. Not according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

As someone suggested on Facebook this a.m., the real question is this: "Was Soucek born a bigot, or was it his choice to be one?"

Dan Soucek like Rick Perry and Republican strategist knows to never let facts or knowledge get in the way of playing to old myths, fears and bigotry of the conservative base.

Dan and his fellow GOP have no ideas or solutions to current problems so political power must come from scapegoats and bigotry.

Actually, the question of a genetic predisposition toward homosexuality is much clearer with males than with females. (Incidentally, gender is not either-or; there are degrees or masculinity and femininity.) With females, intimacy may play a greater role, i.e., social psychological factors may be significant. However, this really shouldn't make a difference in regard to the proposed amendment. How in heck does what two other people do affect what anyone else does? Does it threaten their own relationships? If so, I would examine the latter not others' behavior.

If the response of the phony Christian Neanderthals is that same-sex marriage is not "right," I see that as a religious response, which should have no role in legislation in this country, per the First Amendment.

Either way, I see no legitimate reason for the proposed amendment. And, incidentally, most Western European countries permit same-sex marriage. They have a better system anyway. ALL marriages have to be civil at first. If a couple then wants a religious ceremony IN ADDITION, it is up to them and their religious community.

I thought Soucek was just an empty suit. Turns out I was only half right. He's a bigot in an empty suit.

So from the comment Soucek made, he believes in the civil rights of African Americans but not in the civil rights of gays and lesbians. Figures. Although I'm betting he's a liar and doesn't believe in the civil rights of African Americans either.

Sexual orientation and sexual behavior is not the same thing, geniuses.

"These people who are making a big deal about gay marriage? I don’t give a fuck about who wants to get married to anybody else! Why not?! We’re making a big deal out of things we shouldn’t be making a deal out of. Just give everybody the chance to have the life they want."

Liberal POV,

No sense in treating each human being as an individual. You should just lump people together in groups at every opportunity!

Does anyone ever update this man's photograph so we can see what he looks like now? He is kinda like a reverse Dorian Gray on this website--despite all the evil and hateful things he has been doing the past year or so his portrait seems not to have aged a bit.

A 'real' fundamental difference as opposed to a 'false' fundamental difference? He 'thinks' this is so, so he wants it in the Constitution, 'just cuz'? This is the level of thought process responsible for the lawmaking in our State. Very saddening and frightening.
I did not 'choose' to be a woman, yet my rights are protected by Constitutions. I am allowed Freedom of Choice in my Faith..to follow one or not follow one, as I choose. This Freedom is given to me in our Constitutions.
He is indeed a bigot, spreading lies and hate. Shine the Light on this man and his fear-filled rhetoric every chance there is to do so.

I though I had gone back 100 years when I read the article in the Avery-Journal about Soucek praising the gay marriage ban.
I have many gay friends and not one of them ever "chose" to be gay.
In his pre-election hype he talks about upholding the Constitution.
Which part of that takes away the rights of gays? If he had paid attention he would have noticed the gays in the military with him.
Does he know the "don't ask don't tell" no longer exist. I have several friends who have lost their gay children to suicide because they could not handle the pressure from the bigots like Soucek.
