Junk Food Nation

People are shocked -- SHOCKED -- that a comparative study of government health statistics in both England and the U.S. shows that we're considerably LESS healthy than the Brits: "White, middle-aged Americans -- even those who are rich -- are far less healthy than their peers in England .... Americans had higher rates of diabetes, heart disease, strokes, lung disease and cancer -- findings that held true no matter what income or education level." Oh, go read the whole depressing story for yourself (and thanks to Stumpy for brightening up the day!).

It's not just the soul-destroying junk food. It's got to be the rest of our capitalist system that allows our industries to spew out stuff that will, inevitably, give us all rare, untreatable cancers ... the fine stuff that gets written off the corporate books as "externalities" -- costs of doing business that are other people's problems.

Our economists tell us it's good for us. Republican administrations absolutely BATHE in that tasty soup.
