John Edwards, On the Stump

A profile of Sen. John Edwards, campaigning in Iowa, appears in this morning's New York Times. His stump speech is appealing, though according to the article he doesn't bring up the Iraqi war, since he voted for it, and he no longer attacks Attorney General John Ashcroft, since Edwards also voted for the Patriot Act ... difficult positions to explain in a political race dominated by Howard Dean.

Despite Edwards' attractions as a candidate, polling in North Carolina has consistently shown him losing to President George Bush, though he does out-poll the rest of the Democratic field in his home state. One would hope so. But we haven't seen a poll where he gets more than 43 percent of North Carolinians. What's up with that?
